Archie Invents The Winter X-Games

Probably Shaun White's favorite issue of Archie:

I enjoy mocking Archie for being late to the trends party, but this was almost actually kind of timely. Snowboarding existed in 1978, but was still in its nascent stages as a sport, without a firm definition, consistent board type, or even a name (many called it "snurfing," a portmanteau of "snow" and "surfing").

1979 saw the first World Snurfing Championship, and many people regard that as the beginning of competitive snowboarding. So actually, Archie was actually kinda sorta ahead of the times. Go figure.

Of course, no "real" snowboarders were smart enough to put little skis on their boards. That's why Archie is a genius...
