Bryan Singer Was Right!

So, how powerful was pre-Crisis Superman?

In World's Finest #241 (1976), a group of astronauts (including Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne!!) is out on Earth's first deep space mission, when Earth explodes.

Oops.

The crew is on the verge of panic, so Bruce comes up with a plan to settle them down: he and Clark fake their own suicides!!!

Yeah, I know.

Anyway, the added benefit of that plan is that now, Superman and Batman can show up ("we were on the JLA satellite when Earth exploded...") Of course, why you're worrying about your secret identities when your entire home planet has blown up is another matter. Anybody who cared is dead!

Still, Superman is a handy guy to have around when you're marooned in space...

Of course, they could live on some alien planet--there's no reason Superman couldn't fly them to Rann, to give just one example. But that would mean passing up on a chance to show how dang-blasted powerful Superman is. So, yeah, go ahead--make a new planet!!

The fjords are his favorite part...

Uh...you do know exactly how much water there actually is in the oceans, right, Kal?

And then there's my new favorite panel ever:

Superman as Bouncing Boy? New elastic abdominal/diaphragm powers? Bob Haney's fever dreams?

OK, OK, we get it--Superman is God!! Now can we finally get a good Superman movie??
